There were 105 drivers and passengers involved in ATV or three-wheeler crashes in 1990, the year for which we just finished linking crash and health care records. Of all 105 crash victims, only 9 wore helmets. Forty-two percent of the unhelmeted had head injuries, compared with 22% of the helmeted. Forty-seven percent of the unhelmeted were hospitalized or died, compared with only 11% of the helmeted, a significant difference.
