Department of Health ATV Injuries in
Missouri
There were 105 drivers and passengers involved in ATV or three-wheeler
crashes in 1990, the year
for which we just finished linking crash and health care records. Of
all 105 crash victims, only 9
wore helmets. Forty-two percent of the unhelmeted had
head injuries, compared with 22% of the helmeted. Forty-seven percent
of the unhelmeted were
hospitalized or died, compared with only 11% of the helmeted, a
significant difference.
