Lunar Eclipse

A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes through the shadow cast through space by the Earth. The Earth's shadow has two areas, an outer area called the penumbra and an inner part called the umbra. A total eclipse of the Moon happens when the whole Moon enters into the umbra, otherwise it is called a partial eclipse. Even during a total lunar eclipse the moon is still visible. Some of the light from the sun is refracted through the earths atmosphere, causing the moon to appear dull red.
